The National Monument lies in the Sonoran Desert with the
southern boundary at the U.S. and Mexico border. The Sonoran Desert is one of
the greenest and most diverse deserts in the world. Organ Pipes Cactus National
Monument was designated by the United Nations as an International Biosphere
Reserve in 1976. Organ pipe cactus, saguaro, ocotillo, brittlebush, englemann
prickly pear, palo verde, cholla and mesquite are a few of the varieties of
plants that inhabit this desert area. The park’s namesake organ pipe is the
largest cactus found in the U.S. We caught the park at just the right time with
the super bloom occurring.
